एक मंगलवार रात 11 बजे की बात है।
Office से आकर एक घंटे Polity पढ़ चुका था। UPSC syllabus खुला था, specifically optional subjects की list। और वो कर रहा था जो हर working aspirant उस वक्त करता है: यह सोचना कि कौन सा optional सबसे कम damage करेगा।
Passion से नहीं, damage control से। यही honest शुरुआत है।
मैंने Geography चुना। और आज भी लगता है सही चुना। लेकिन उन reasons से नहीं जो हर जगह बताए जाते हैं।
Internet क्या बताता है : और क्या छुपाता है
“UPSC working professional के लिए best optional” search करो, हर जगह तीन same points मिलेंगे:
- GS Paper I के साथ overlap है
- GS Paper III के साथ overlap है
- Map-based है, visual है, याद रहता है।
तीनों सच हैं। लेकिन पूरी कहानी नहीं हैं।
जो नहीं बताया जाता: Geography Paper II (Human Geography) dense है और theoretical है। Majid Husain light read नहीं है। Map work में regular time चाहिए, binge करने से नहीं होता। और Mains में Geography answers में diagrams expected हैं, जो अगर सालों से नहीं बनाए तो पहले awkward और slow लगते हैं।
यह बताने का मतलब discourage करना नहीं है। बताने का मतलब यह है कि अगर तुम “easy optional” की उम्मीद लेकर आए, तो Month 3 में Majid Husain देखकर लगेगा कि कहीं गलती हो गई। अगर reality पता हो, तो उस difficulty के लिए ready रहोगे।
असली वजह : जो मुझे काम आई
Overlap argument एक बार के लिए छोड़ो। Geography मेरे लिए सही था क्योंकि syllabus finite है और sources defined हैं।
Geography Optional के लिए broadly consensus है कि क्या पढ़ना है:
- G.C. Leong : Certificate of Physical and Human Geography
- Majid Husain :Geography of India
- Majid Husain : Human Geography
- NCERTs Class 11–12
- Atlas work
बस। कोई ambiguity नहीं। Literature या Philosophy जैसे optionals में source list ही तय करने में महीने लग जाते हैं। Geography में Day 1 से execute कर सकते हो।
नौकरी करने वाले aspirant के लिए यह predictability बहुत valuable है। मेरे पास 3 महीने source list figure करने का time नहीं है।
Geography Overlap का फायदा : लेकिन deliberately लेना होगा
GS के साथ overlap तभी advantage बनता है जब तुम consciously उसे activate करो।
Example: जब Leong में drainage systems पढ़ता हूँ, तो एक साथ cover होता है:
- GS Paper I: Indian rivers, Himalayan vs Peninsular rivers
- GS Paper I: World Geography, fluvial landforms
- GS Paper III: Flood management, disaster risk
- Geography Optional Paper I: Drainage patterns, river landforms
एक chapter, चार exam areas। लेकिन यह connection passively नहीं होता, actively बनाना पड़ता है।
मेरी notebook में हर optional chapter के साथ एक column है: “GS Overlap।” जब भी connection मिलता है, note करता हूँ। Extra 5 मिनट per session लगते हैं, लेकिन घंटों की separate GS revision बचती है।
जो actually hard था : honestly
Vague honesty बेकार है। Specifically क्या मुश्किल था:
Majid Husain की speed कम है। Academic style है, skim नहीं होता। मैं 12–15 pages per hour पढ़ पाता हूँ, बाकी UPSC material से slower। 3 घंटे के morning block में एक chapter पूरा होता है, कभी-कभी 2 sessions में। Plan accordingly करो।
Diagrams practice चाहते हैं, अचानक नहीं आते। Mains में Geography answers में diagrams expected हैं। पहली बार बनाने में slow और self-conscious feel होता है। Solution simple है, हर Geography session के end में एक diagram बनाओ। Rough, imperfect, लेकिन रोज़। Speed repetition से आती है।
Map work regular चाहिए, intense नहीं। 3 महीने ignore करके 2 हफ्ते में cram नहीं होता। Spatial memory spaced exposure से बनती है। हर session के अंत में 10 मिनट maps, यह habit बनाओ।
Paper II actually दो papers हैं। Human Geography (theoretical models) और Geography of India (factual, analytical), दोनों बिल्कुल अलग character के हैं। एक अच्छा prepare होता है, दूसरा छूट जाता है, यह mistake बहुत common है।
मैंने कैसे शुरू किया Geography Optional: हफ्ते by हफ्ते

मेरे हफ्ते में Geography को Tuesday और Thursday की morning मिलती है। उन दिनों सिर्फ Geography। बीच में Polity या Economy नहीं। Focused, uninterrupted block से depth आती है, 30-30 मिनट के टुकड़ों से नहीं।
क्या नौकरी के साथ Geography manageable है?
हाँ। एक condition के साथ।
Manageable है अगर तुम यह accept कर लो कि full-time student से slower चलोगे — और plan उस हिसाब से बनाओ। वो Leong 3 हफ्ते में finish करेगा, तुम 6 हफ्ते में। यह failure नहीं है — यह available time का accurate reflection है।
Problem तब होती है जब working professional full-time student की pace match करने की कोशिश करता है और rushed, incomplete reading में end होता है जो stick नहीं करती।
एक बार, ठीक से पढ़ो। 7 हफ्ते में proper first reading उस बंदे की 3 हफ्ते की rushed reading से बेहतर है जिसे 4 बार re-read करना पड़े।
अगर अभी decide नहीं किया है
Geography इसलिए मत चुनो कि किसी Reddit thread ने “scoring” बताया। हर optional सही candidate के लिए scoring है।
Geography choose करो अगर: Physical processes genuinely interesting लगते हैं, maps और spatial thinking comfortable है, finite syllabus और clear sources चाहिए, और slow careful reading से problem नहीं।
Choose करने से पहले एक काम करो: Leong के 20 pages पढ़ो — summary नहीं, actual book। अगर थोड़ा भी engage करते हैं, Geography viable है। अगर concrete पढ़ने जैसा लगे — reconsider करो।
18 महीने तुम्हें वो optional पढ़ना है। वो choose करो जिसे तुम बुरे दिनों में भी open कर सको।
मेरे सबसे थके हुए दिनों में भी Leong खुलता है। यही मेरा जवाब है।
अगर Geography के साथ पूरे preparation system को समझना है, तो यह article पढ़ो — जहाँ हफ्ते के plan में Optional का exactly क्या place है, वो detail में है।
नौकरी भी। तैयारी भी।
